about

The first time I heard La Monte Young's "Poem for Chairs, Tables, Benches, etc" i was thinking about all those individual little scraping sounds--how each one was similar, but not identical, to every other little scraping sound. and how, each one was brittle and finite, but all together they make this dense mass of noise. I wondered if one could create something similar by taking some very short, similar but not identical recordings and randomly scattering them over a much longer recording. I wrote some software to test the idea, and realized I could extend the idea in two areas: I could create a bunch of "similar but not identical" samples by just divvy-ing up a long recording into tiny clips, and that I could sort of "homogenize" the sound by scattering thousands (or tens of thousands, or whatever) of copies of the individual samples over a longer sample either randomly or according to some arbitrary probability curve.

At any rate, I keep an AM radio on in my workspace for background noise, and while writing the above mentioned software I noticed that whenever my next-door neighbors would back their car down the driveway (and past the windows of my workspace), my radio would let out a horrendous squeal. I ended up using one of these squeals to test my software: Track 1 is the pure radio noise, Track 2 is what the software spit out, and Track 3 is a similar treatment using several different squeals.
